Who owns Shoprite in us?
After World War II, independent grocers faced a challenging time as food rationing ended and price controls were lifted. During the war, customers were loyal to independent grocers, but they started noticing that self-service supermarkets offered a wider selection of products at lower prices.
To assist struggling grocers, a sales representative from Del Monte Foods introduced the idea of pooling resources to purchase products at lower costs. In 1946, eight independent grocers from Newark, New Jersey embraced this concept and formed a cooperative buying group. They used their collective buying power to offer customers competitive prices on the same goods. The success of the trial period led to the formalization of this relationship on December 5, 1946, and Wakefern Food Corp was born. Each grocer invested $1000 into the new entity.
Today, Wakefern Food Corp is the largest retailer-owned cooperative in the United States. It consists of 50 member companies that independently own and operate 362 retail supermarkets. These supermarkets operate under various banners such as ShopRite, Price Rite Marketplace, The Fresh Grocer, Dearborn Market, Gourmet Garage, and Fairway Market. They serve customers in markets across New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island.

In an interview with Bruce Whitfield on The Money Show, Christo Wiese, the co-founder of Shoprite and Pep Stores, and the third richest person in Africa according to Forbes, shared his insights and experiences.
Forbes estimates Wiese’s net worth to be around R100 billion. He owns 15% of Shoprite, Africa’s largest retailer, and 17% of Steinhoff, the global retail holding firm that owns Pepkor.
Wiese attended Paarl Boys High School and studied at Stellenbosch University, where he earned BA and LLB degrees.
Under Wiese’s leadership, Shoprite has grown from a small chain of eight supermarkets to the behemoth it is today. The company employs 136,000 people.
Wiese’s success story began when he bought out the Pep founders’ shares in 1981. He has always strived to be a leader and not settle for being a number two.
